The Fine Art of Frances F. Wilson
Frances Foster Wilson was born in Carlsbad, NM. From an early age, she had a great love of drawing. She attended two years of Art School in San Jose and San Francisco with courses in Education as a more practical approach to life following that. She taught in both a rural one room school house, the public schools in Carlsbad and as a student teacher in San Francisco.
Studying under Rodrick Mead in Carlsbad she learned oil painting at the side of a master painter and artist. Moving to San Francisco later in life, she obtained a degree in Art and Education from San Francisco State College. She went on to exhibit her work in the San Francisco Bay Area, obtaining awards for her lively paintings full of movement and light. Frances explored printmaking with Apple Tree Press while living for a time in San Mateo, California.
Upon the retirement of her husband, Page, they returned to Carlsbad. She went on to create art through a long lifetime and has left immediate, colorful impressions of people and places as a legacy.
A little about the work of Frances Joy who is my mother.
My siblings and I grew up in a household with two very creative parents. My father was a mining engineer who was inventive and had a passion for chemistry. My mother was an oil painter, water-colorist , pastel artist and print maker. She was, I think, her happiest when working on the human form, and on portraits. She had a great gift for that work. Her career as an artist spanned from the early 1920's to 2009 . She died in 2011 at the age of 103.
I have many wonderful art works from her years as an artist. Her portfolios and much of her work is housed in the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center as well as in the homes of the people of Carlsbad and the Northern California Bay area, where they spent many years,
